Pets need protection from winter cold

Dec 29, 2017 | 1:00 PM

When it’s too cold for people to stay outside, it’s too cold for pets to stay outside as well.

Sgt. Ross Gear with Enforcement Services says people in Grande Prairie are great when it comes to caring for pets, and they haven’t had any incidents during this cold snap.

But the resources are there if necessary.

“We have to watch the animals. If they have to go out for a while, that’s fine,” he said.  “But just be conscious of that, and if the animal begins to shiver … bring it inside.”

If you notice an animal in distress where no one is home call Bylaw for assistance.

“The animal has to clearly be in distress. If it’s clearly in distress, call, and we’ll do our best to intervene,” he said.

“We’ll make sure the animal is safe and try to contact the owner.”

He says, depending on the breed, some dogs will be able to find warmth inside of vehicles.  He urges people to call for help only if the pet appears to be in distress.

“I think people in Grande Prairie are good people and look after their pets very well,” he said.

“People need to understand that an animal used to being inside just can’t take the cold as well as an animal used to being outside. They just don’t have the fur that allows them to feel insulated.”

He says everyone makes a mistake from time to time and if needed, bylaw officers will be there to assist animals in need.
